Researchers from US universities, NGOs Transnational Institute and Fellowship of Reconciliation have used official sources, security websites, and private research to map more than 800 bases in more than 60 countries. The US has by far the largest number of bases, but French, British, German, Russian, as well as joint international bases such as NATO and EUFOR bases have all been mapped.

This article was hidden away in the Guardian colour supplement on Saturday, which is unfortunate, as it tells us much about how the world works. First a bit of background. The US and the UK, we are told, are deeply concerned about nuclear proliferation. Iran, we are told, is a major threat to the stability of the world, on the grounds that they are, it seems, attempting to develop the technology to build their own nuclear weapons. The United States opposes this because, of course, the US opposes nuclear proliferation, especially amongst 'rogue' or 'unstable' states and especially amongst rogue states associated with Islamic fundamentalism.

The story is simple: as has been the case frequently in the past, the anti-war movement will be holding a peaceful march on Monday 8th October to protest against Britain's continuing presence in Iraq. These marches and demonstrations are invariably peaceful with a low number of arrests (if anyone is arrested at all), and are an essential part of the democratic process given that the supine media have now forced the war off the front pages and replaced it with endless stories about Diana and Madeleine.
The March that is proposed for Monday, however, will be different, because the British Government has banned it. 'The Government has decided to ban a peaceful march called by the Stop the War Coalition on 8 October. The protest has been called to demand all the troops withdrawn from Iraq immediately. The police have said all protests within one mile of Parliament are now prohibited. This is an affront to democratic rights and contradicts the Prime Minister's commitment to liberalising protest laws. We urge the authorities to review this decision.' There's a persistent myth about Europe that is held by many 'liberal' Americans. This is the idea that whereas the United States' media is of course completely controlled by giant corporations, right wing, favours the Bush administration etc., in Europe things are different. Social democracy remains on the agenda for politicians. The press is less hysterical, less savage, less 'right wing'. Stories which are prioritised in Europe are sometimes barely even covered in the US. And so on. I'm sure you must have encountered this meme before: how many times have you read some critique of the American media, which has, at some point in the article a sentence beginning: 'in contrast, the European media....' etc.

Oh, lovely. A rare look inside the gut-wrenchingly Soviet manipulations of the Bush administration today, as we find that "Senior American intelligence and defence officials believe that President George W Bush and his inner circle are taking steps to place America on the path to war with Iran".
What? Is this even America any more? Parts of the government don't know what the people in power will do about taking us to war or not? This is sad commentary on the ruination of a great nation, isn't it? It is exactly the same as if, in the 80's, we had read something like, "Senior Kremlin officials belive that Premier Gorbachev and his inner circle are taking steps to place the Soviet Union on the path to war with Iran." And we would have marvelled at the corruption that allows a communist and authoritarian nation to override the interests of its people so... The title of this story. (Apologies for dealing so myopically with this possible attack on Iran, but it seems to be of so much more importance than anything else at the moment, despite the fact that most of the mainstream media seem to be ignoring it).
